JUAN SAVES THE DAY!

In the Spring of 1997, HRI Carpenter Juan Serrano was shopping in a local grocery store, when a commotion caught his attention. A young boy was choking, his face red with panic, and the frantic mother didn’t know what to do.

Juan asked the mother for permission to assist, then lifted the toddler into his arms and performed the Heimlich maneuver, an emergency procedure Juan had learned just the week before in an HRI First Aid class. A second application of the procedure expelled an almond from the child’s throat and a healthy cry from the boy.

When Juan related the story a day later, the company was so moved by his willingness to apply what he had learned, we awarded him a plaque with his name and the date of his heroic deed.

Though not required by OSHA for a company of our size, Harrell Remodeling hosts an all-day CPR/First Aid seminar each year which is open to all employees. You never know when it might come in handy. Great job, Juan.
